The Fuel EXe heralds a new era of e-bike performance. It’s Trek’s first lightweight, trail, electric bike but it benefits from decades of experience making some of the best bikes in the world. The EXe is ideally suited for anyone who wants the benefits of pedal assistance but prefers the looks and ride feel of an analogue bike. At only 18.17kg for the size medium, it’s only 4.9kg heavier than its conventional counterpart. This small weight penalty is made possible with the use of a lightweight and low bulk drive system from TQ, housed in a carbon fibre frame. The TQ drive system is so quiet that the motor noise is hardly perceptible, especially when compared to high-powered e-bikes. Despite its small size, the motor still kicks out 250W and 50Nm of torque, so you can get to the top quickly and enjoy the descent with fresh legs.
The suspension platform is based on that of the EXe’s non-electric cousin, the Fuel EX. 150mm of travel up front and 140mm in the rear are delivered by the sturdy RockShox Lyrik fork and supple Super Deluxe shock respectively. SRAM’s GX AXS wireless, electronic drivetrain shifts incredibly fast and smoothly. With no cables to stretch or get sticky, shifting precision is guaranteed. A single chainring paired with a 12-speed cassette gets you a monstrous 10-52 tooth gear range for climbing the steepest of hills. You won’t be left wanting for braking power either, with the SRAM Code R brakes providing tons of stopping power. Excellent for keeping your speed in check on steep descents.
The frame geometry is bang up-to-date for snappy handling and stability at speed, so you can deathgrip through rock gardens with confidence. Trek’s active braking pivot suspension design ensures that you get the full benefit of your rear suspension’s shock absorption, even under heavy braking load.
If you want an electric mountain bike that gives you uphill power and impecable handling, then look no further than the Fuel EXe 9.8 GX AXS.
